Scout Dies in NH Lake Boating Accident, One of 3 Deaths Friday

NOTE: This report was updated to add two additional water-related deaths that occurred on Friday.

A Scout drowned in Manning Lake Friday afternoon in a boating accident near a camp in Gilmanton, one of three water-related deaths in New Hampshire on Friday.

A New Hampshire Fish and Game dive team along with Gilmanton Police and Fire and New Hampshire State Police Marine Patrol responded to the lake, according to State Police. A scout who was with a group was injured and pronounced dead at the scene.

A spokeswoman did not disclose details about the accident, and said it remained under investigation. The victim is from out of state.

Gilmanton Fire Department Capt. John Cunningham told the Union Leader his department the first report of an accident came in around 2:20 p.m.

The Daniel Webster Council said it was "heartbroken" to confirm the fatality.

"We offer our deepest condolences to the Scout's family and ask everyone to please join in keeping this young man and his loved ones in their thoughts and prayers during this difficult time," the Daniel Webster Council wrote on their Facebook page.

The Council's Griswold Scout Reservation is located near Gilmanton Iron Works and includes two summer camps, Hidden Valley Scout Camp and Camp Bell.

Also on Friday afternoon, Manchester Police received a call about a body found by boaters on the Piscataquog River in Manchester, near the border of Goffstown. The Marine Patrol, along with troopers from Troop B and the Major Crime Unit, identified the body as Shawn Barton, 40.

An investigation is underway to determine his cause of death.

Police were called in Madison in Carroll County when a Massachusetts woman swimming at a rental property on Middle Pea Porridge Pond in Madison did not return to shore.

The Marine Patrol, troopers, and Fish & Game personnel searched the water for Amy Posocco, 41, of Beverly, and located her body 90 feet offshore.

The immediate cause of death is not known, but considered to be accidental.
