Exercise Near Shipyard Could Cause Delays, Additional Activity

You may notice some extra activity around the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard as the yard participates in an annual exercise starting Monday.

The Exercise Citadel Shield-Solid Curtain 2022 is not in response to any threat, but is rather designed to enhance the readiness of Navy security forces and ensure seamless
interoperability among the commands, other services, and agency partners.

Residents might hear or see "security activities" that are part of the exercise. There could also be additional traffic around the base and delayed access to it. The exercises continue through Feb. 11.

“We train the way we fight, and this annual exercise uses realistic scenarios to ensure U.S. Navy security forces maintain a high level of readiness to respond to changing and dynamic threats,” Shipyard Commander,Captain Daniel Ettlich said in a statement.

The exercise tests a wide variety of things including information dissemination, individual response plans, security force response, and the ability to coordinate
with local emergency responders and the community, according to Ettlich.
