Dover police is investigating another death that may be drug-related, according to police, which would be the 17th such death in Dover this year.

Police said they responded to 10 Avon Avenue and found an unresponsive individual who was pronounced dead at the scene. The individual was identified as Peter Smith, 47, of Dover.

The manner of death will ultimately be determined by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, police said, although an initial investigation spurred police to believe Smith's death to be drug-related, according to a statement.

Dover police said that, if Smith's death is confirmed to be drug-related, it would be the 17th overdose death in Dover this year. There were nine drug-related deaths in Dover logged in 2019.

The SIS Recovery Community Organization at 603-841-2350 and the Doorway operated by Wentworth-Douglass Hospital at 798 Central Avenue are also resources available to the public, police said. The Doorway is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
