Road Trip Worthy: There’s a Huge 40-Foot Milk Bottle Hiding in Plain Sight in Boston
New England is home to numerous quirky and fun landmarks.
To name a few, there's a life-size moose made out of chocolate in Scarborough, Maine, a massive historic Redstone Rocket in Warren, New Hampshire, and a mysterious rocking horse graveyard in Lincoln, Massachusetts.
Here's one more to add to your road trip list: a giant Hood milk bottle in Boston.
What is the History of the Hood Milk Bottle?
According to Boston Magazine, the legacy of the giant Hood milk bottle began in 1933 when it was used as an ice cream stand in Taunton, Massachusetts. The magazine noted that ownership would be passed on after some time, but the sweet treats would continue to be sold at the location until the '60s.
That was when the milk bottle was abandoned.
Caught in Southie magazine said that the dairy company Hood purchased the roadside attraction not long after, renovated it, and donated it to the Boston Children's Museum.
According to the museum, the refurbished milk bottle was brought to its new location in Boston, right by the museum, in 1977.
The bottle received some renovations since then, but has been a landmark destination in Boston now for nearly 50 years.
Oh, and you can even purchase ice cream and some other concession foods from it when it's open for the season.
How Tall is the Hood Milk Bottle?
The Boston Children's Museum states that the giant Hood milk bottle is 40 feet tall and weighs 15,000 pounds.
And if you're wondering how much milk would fit in the bottle if they filled it?
Yup. There's an answer: 58,620 gallons of milk.
