This Maine Company Has Been Around Since Way Before the Civil War
Here in New England, you really don't have to look far to find a business that has been around for decades. Or, to find a business that has been around for over fifty years. But, it is not that often that you find a business that has been around for longer than a century.
Even though they are not common, and may be hard to find, they do exist.
Tucked away on Maine's mid-coast, there is a company that has not only been around for a century, it has been around for the better part of two centuries.
Mathews Brothers, which has their headquarters in Belfast, has been in business since 1854! Yes, since 7 years before the American Civil War nearly tore the country apart.
The company, which makes high quality windows and doors, got its start when brothers Noah Merrill Mathews and Spencer Walcott Mathews began a partnership in a window sash and millworks company. Back then, the company was called N.M. & S.W. Mathews Company. In 1860, they changed their name to Mathews & Company. Following a devastating fire in 1873, they changed their name - again - to Mathews Brothers Company.
The really wild part about that company was that, even though the fire destroyed the business, it only took them seventy days (just over two months) to completely rebuild.
Always forward thinking, for a time in the early 1900s, Mathews Brothers was one of the largest women owned & operated companies in the country.
These days, the company is still making high quality doors and windows. The company is also known for their very quirky radio and Youtube commercials.
