Maine’s Portland Jetport Unveils $21.6 Million Upgrade to Improve Travel Experience
Big news for folks flying in and out of Maine’s busiest airport, as the Portland International Jetport recently completed a $21.6 million expansion project, according to WGME 13, and celebrated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony this week.
The upgrades focus on making travel easier and more sustainable for the growing number of passengers passing through. Jetport Director Paul Bradbury told WGME 13 the project centered on accessibility and sustainability.
Among the new additions are three passenger boarding bridges to help speed up boarding and deplaning, seven ADA-accessible restrooms, an adult changing room for people with disabilities, and a service animal relief area.
One of the neat tech improvements, explained by Bradbury to WGME 13, is a system installed under bridges 11, 12, and 14 that preconditions air for aircraft, heating or cooling cabins without needing to run the plane’s auxiliary power units, which helps reduce noise and emissions.
Portland City Councilor Pious Ali emphasized the importance of collaboration between local, state, and federal officials, telling WGME 13, “When the cities, states, and federal government work on things together, we tend to have good results for people in our city, state, and country.”
Bradbury also pointed out, according to WGME 13, that the improvements are a big win for travelers with mobility challenges, making the airport more accessible and easier to navigate.
He said, “It’s a huge improvement for anybody with mobility challenges, and this is what we need at an airport in Maine, especially for the state’s largest commercial airport.”
The Jetport isn’t stopping with this project either, as they’re also working on rebuilding terminal aprons and exploring ways to expand federal inspection services to support international travel.
So, if you’re flying through Portland anytime soon, expect a smoother, more comfortable experience thanks to these upgrades.
