Did You Know You Can’t Wear These Clothing Items to Maine Polling Places?
If you are heading out to the polls next week, and I know you are, there are a few things to keep in mind. I for one didn’t realize that this was a "thing" but alas, it is. And it makes sense.
In Maine, as in so many other states, polling places have specific rules about what you, the voter can wear while casting your ballot.
Why? Pretty simple, to keep the peace. They want to make sure that the air in the polling spot is respectful and neutral. So, no matter who you are voting for, you can walk in without worry of political intimidation.
Election law in Maine prohibits any influence within 250 feet of polling places, as per the report.
Let me give you a short breakdown of the clothing attire and accessories that are not allowed:
According to WMTW, under Maine law Title 21 A, you can't wear items such as hats, shirts, or buttons that have campaign messaging.
So if your fit promotes a specific candidate or political party, that is not allowed.
Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows said, per the article that "any apparel that explicitly advocates for a candidate, has their names, or even implicitly, whether that's ‘Vote for Her’ or ‘Make America Great Again,’ those are implicit messages that a reasonable person would see influence and would potentially violate Maine election law under Title 21 A.
Any political symbols or clothing featuring political symbols or logos that advocate for a particular party or agenda falls under this prohibition.
According to the article, this includes items like "MAGA" hats and shirts supporting figures like Kamala Harris or other candidates.
