This is one city in Maine that many of us has frequented has always been wonderful but dare I say never seemed “unusual”.

According to Travel A lot, right outside of this super iconic shopping destination, you will find what we as Mainer’s call the, Desert of Maine. Located at 95 Desert Road in Freeport, the Desert of Maine sounds like something straight out of a sci-fi flick but trust me, it’s for real.

It’s not just a tourist trap, it’s a legit piece of history and a real scientific story behind it that took place right here, in Maine.

When did this happen?

According to CDM, the Ice Age took place 2.4 million years ago.

The juicy gossip is that in Freeport a glacier decided to have a little but of fun and left a massive patch of sand right in the middle of Maine's cooler land, as per the article. 

Now, I don’t know about you, but when I think of deserts, I picture hot dry temps, cactus’s and flying carpets.

The Desert of Maine is misleading because it’s not exactly the Sahara but it’s stroll super strange, cool, and dare I say it.. Unusual. But it is certainly a sight to see.  

It’s crazy because you’re literally standing in a sea of sand in the middle of pine trees.
