Many Mainers enjoy experiencing the adventurous activities of cliff diving in our state.

Every summer, people head over to places like Gulf Hagas, Beast Cove Quarry, and Coos Canyon to sore off the cliffs into the pools of water.

But sometimes, these jumps result in serious injury.

Just before 3 PM this past Sunday, the Sun Journal reported that responders were called to rescue an unidentified woman who sustained injuries after jumping into the Swift River near Coos Canyon in Bryan, Maine.

The incident took place at the Rest Area near Route 17, as per the report.

Rescue and fire departments from the area came to the woman’s aide.

The Deputy Chief of the Rumford Maine, Police Department, Mike Arsenault, said the woman did not have life-threatening injuries.

In order to rescue her, first responders had to use ropes to pull her in. She was then transported to a local hospital.

Below are some safety tips from Redbull when engaging in activities like cliff jumping:

  • Go to recognized and known spots where many before have jumped successfully.
  • Take a deep look at the diving area before you jump.
  • Check the depth of the water and make sure it's deep enough for a jump.
  • Make sure to breath out of your nose forcefully when jumping so you don't suck in too much water.
  • Go with friends to make sure that everyone is watching each other
  • Look for jagged edges and make sure the area you are jumping from isn't slippery

Embrace Maine's natural beauty. Be bold and take risks, but always stay cautious when engaging in more adventurous activities like cliff jumping.
