Our Pine Tree State has a spooky side that we can’t ignore, making it perfect for horror lovers. With Stephen and Tabitha King’s creepy house in Bangor attracting folks ‘from away,’ our state feels like it's straight out of one of his books—because, well, it is! Many of King’s stories are inspired by Maine and set here. When it comes to Halloween, Mainers are all in, making the spooky season feel even more exciting in ‘Vacationland.’

What’s the methodology behind picking a ‘favorite Halloween movie’ for an entire state? It seems pretty subjective, right?

Comparitech used Google Trends to determine their picks for ‘The Most Popular Halloween Movies by State’ in 2024. They searched for the ‘horror’ genre in each state and checked the rising topics, which are the related search terms that saw the biggest increase in searches over the past year. The top-rising movie in each state was named as that state's most popular Halloween film.

So, what is it? What’s the most popular Halloween movie in our Pine Tree State?

According to a report from Comparitech, based on Google Trends, Insidious is the most popular Halloween movie in 'Vacationland.' Along with North Dakota and Wyoming, Maine chose the 2010 horror film. Comparitech had this to say about Maine’s selection:

These three states are also seeking a bit of paranormal activity. Insidious sees a family’s quest to save their son’s life after he mysteriously falls into a coma. They enlist the help of paranormal experts who uncover a realm of terrifying, unearthly entities. The family must confront their fears and navigate the supernatural to rescue their son.

What are your thoughts on Insidious being chosen as Maine’s favorite Halloween movie? No Stephen King? We should almost feel insulted, right? We’d love to hear from you! Feel free to join the conversation by messaging us on the app.
