Do You Know Who the Richest Person in Maine Is?
The wealthiest person in our Pine Tree State is also among the most affluent individuals in the world.
Considering there are over 8 billion people globally, being one of the top thousand-ish wealthiest individuals is quite impressive. And this Mainer is indeed one of those elites. According to Forbes, as of August 15th, 2024, this Mainer ranks as the 1,032nd wealthiest person in the world. That's not too shabby!
So, who is this billionaire Mainer?
According to Forbes’ list of 'The Richest Person in Every State,' Susan Alfond and her three siblings inherited a fortune from their father, Harold Alfond, who founded the Dexter Shoe Company.
As the story goes, in 1958, Harold transformed an old mill into a successful shoemaking business, producing millions of boots and casual shoes. He sold the company to Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway in 1993 for $420 million in stock, which is now worth billions.
So, how many billions is Susan Alfond worth?
Again, according to Forbes, Susan is worth $3.2 billion as of August 15th, 2024. This is up from $2.5 billion in 2023 and $2.8 billion in 2022.
If the name 'Alfond' rings a bell, it might be because of the 'Harold Alfond Sports Arena' at the University of Maine, often referred to as 'The Alfond.'
Also named after the Alfond family, home to the University of Maine Black Bears football team, the Harold Alfond Sports Stadium. Like the Harold Alfond Sports Arena, it's also located on the University of Maine campus.
