Evacuations Recommended in Parts of Auburn as Androscoggin River Expected to Reach Record Levels
The City of Auburn, Maine is on alert as water roaring in the Androscoggin River continues to rise.
People in Auburn have been posting photos on social media of flooded basements, washed-out roads, and impassible roads covered in water. The City of Auburn posted a long list of roads that are partially or fully closed to damage from the storm and the high water.
At 4:34 p.m. Tuesday, the City sent an emergency alert to phones in the area recommending evacuation for areas near the Androscoggin River as they expect the water to reach record levels by noon on Wednesday. The City has strongly recommended those in low-lying areas such as North River Road, Newbury Street, and Riverside Drive evacuate those areas.
Brandon Harris of Auburn has been taking photos and videos on his Facebook page and shared a couple with us that show just how high the water levels are, and they are only going to get higher.
Cars have water up to the doors and the Auburn Riverwalk is more like a swim at the moment.
The Cumberland Farms on Center Street in Auburn had water up around their gas pumps and in their lot this morning.
The City of Auburn says that residents should limit their travel within the city for the time being. If you choose to remain in your home, monitor water levels on an ongoing basis as they may rise rapidly and unexpectedly, making it difficult or impossible for responders to reach you in an emergency.
A free overnight shelter has been established for Auburn and Lewiston residents at the Ramada Inn, 490 Pleasant Street, Lewiston. Bring identification with you, and a crate for any pets. If you need transportation to the shelter call 333-6670.
