New England’s Lifestyle Draws Retirees From Everywhere
I've lived in Maine all my life. 50 something-something years. There's no place I'd rather live than here in the Pine Tree State. Even though hot, humid weather and snowstorms are the norm in New England, more often than not, you get more nice days than you get bad days with the weather patterns.
There's actually a lot that New England has to offer people who are looking to retire.
CNBC released its list of the best states in America to retire in, and four New England States made the top 10.
6. Rhode Island
Rhode Island covers an area of 1,214 square miles. If you drove South to North, you'd only drive 48 miles before you reached Massachusetts. However, there are 400 miles of coastline which is attractive to retirees.
4. Vermont
What little I know about Vermont is that it's famous for cheese and maple syrup. I also had an old college roommate who lives there. We had a fine time something-something years ago. Time flies. If you plan on retiring there for the cheese and maple syrup, I support that.
2. Maine
My home state. As far as I'm concerned, there's nothing better than the State of Maine. Sure, taxes are high. Sure, tourists are everywhere. Sure, we can get several feet of snow on occasion. But this is "The Way Life Should Be." I bet retirees read that slogan and are headed this way right now.
1. New Hampshire
New Hampshire is an anomaly among all 50 states. There's no sales tax, no income tax, liquor stores on the highway, no mandatory seat belt laws, and no requirement to have car insurance. It's like the wild, wild west of New England. But watch out for that property tax. They've got to make their money somehow.
