Yacht Rock. It's a music genre that used to be called "soft rock" until a 2005 mockumentary web series titled "Yacht Rock" debuted. It followed the lives and careers of American soft rock stars of the late 1970s and early 1980s, and the name stuck.

The Yacht Rock genre includes music by artists such as Kenny Loggins, Michael McDonald, Hall and Oates, Toto, Steely Dan, and the king of Yacht Rock, Christopher Cross. I have no shame in declaring that I am an avid Yacht Rock fan. It was music I grew up on before music got a little more rock 'n roll in the '80s.

Christopher Cross was one of those artists whose music I thoroughly enjoyed. He has a baritone-tenor voice that makes him instantly recognizable. He won five Grammy Awards in 1981, including "Best New Artist."

Christopher Cross is currently on tour, and will be stopping at several venues here in New England. You can be sure he'll be performing songs like "Ride Like The Wind"...

..."Arthur's Theme (Best That You Can Do)" from the movie Arthur, starring the late Dudley Moore...

...and of course, the ultimate yacht rock song, "Sailing."

Here are the New England touring dates and times.

  • July 6 at Tupelo Music Hall in Derry, New Hampshire
  • July 7 at Indian Ranch in Webster, Massachusetts
