Instead, Maine sits near the bottom when compared with other states in the U.S. Only Vermont and North Dakota have fewer fatal crashes on their respective deadliest 10-mile stretches of highway.

According to the Maine Department of Transportation, there were 33,705 crashes across the state in 2023, including 127 that were tragically fatal.

How Many Crashes Were There in Maine in 2024?

For 2024, the transportation department reported there were 32,724 crashes and 166 fatal crashes.

How Many Crashes Were There in Maine in 2025?

As of May 2025, according to the MDOT, there have been 12,906 crashes in the state with 30 fatalities.
