Believe in Ghosts? These 3 Haunted Maine Lighthouses Will Give You the Chills
Sure, Maine doesn't have the most lighthouses in the country (that would be Michigan, if you're wondering), but they are pretty synonymous with the state.
There are over 60 of these iconic landmarks in Maine, according to Maine.gov, including the likes of Portland Head Light and Nubble Lighthouse.
But you might be surprised to know that some of these lighthouses are haunted.
What is the most haunted lighthouse in Maine?
Turns out, the paranormal has decided it's a big fan of Maine lighthouses, just like the tourists who flock to see them every year.
Multiple ones are said to be haunted, carrying with them a little extra spookiness.
That might not be the wind you hear howling...
Seguin Island Light
According to NELights.com, Seguin Island Light is Maine’s second-oldest lighthouse and is said to be one of the most haunted in the state.
It's also only accessible by boat, so going there on a foggy or overcast day, I imagine, would make the place even more eerie.
The Friends of Seguin Lighthouse Station website said there are multiple tales of the supernatural, including ghostly piano music heard by sailors, a child laughing and calling out to visitors, and furniture that moves on its own.
Boon Island Light
Maine Lights Today states that Boon Island Light is the tallest lighthouse in Maine at 133 feet.
As for the lighthouse haunting? NELights.com reports that there have been many sightings of a female ghost, with some even saying they have seen "a faint apparition of a woman dressed in white heading to the tower."
Strange New England also notes that the legend of this ghost stems from a lighthouse keeper on Boon Island who brought his wife to the remote outpost, but after he died in a storm, she was left alone and eventually succumbed to starvation and grief.
Her ghost is said to still haunt the island, but with the lighthouse now automated, it's not like there are regular keepers there for her to visit.
Wood Island Light
According to Woodislandlighthouse.org, Wood Island Lighthouse is located off the coast of Biddeford on an uninhabited island.
NELights.com says that "moans are still heard from the chicken coop shack, and locked doors have been mysteriously opened at the lighthouse."
The website even notes that the paranormal research team New England Ghost Project visited the island and reported shadowy figures near the lighthouse and walkway.
These are only a handful of haunted lighthouses in Maine. In fact, there are others with reported tales of ghosts and the paranormal.
