Portland, Maine, is known as a top-tier foodie location. You probably even have some favorite spots you love going to when you're there.

Publications like LoveFood have called out the Old Port as the best in Maine to grab a bite out to eat, and Food and Wine ranked it in the top 10 U.S. cities for food and drink.

But sadly, while Portland has a stand-out restaurant scene, some beloved establishments have had to close their doors over the years leaving behind fond memories and delicious meals.

Portland has had at least 10 places close for good so far in 2024. Let's take a look and remember some of them below.

Bao Bao Dumpling House on Spring Street in Portland, Maine

Bao Bao Dumpling House closed in February 2024 after nearly 10 years. The restaurant started in Portland in October 2014. Bao Bao later opened a new location in Brunswick in May 2024.

Stars & Stripes Brewing on Spring Street in Portland, Maine

Stars & Stripes Brewing closed in February 2024. It opened its location in April 2022. The brewery still has its original spot in Freeport, which opened in November 2018.

Helm Oyster Bar & Bistro on Thames Street in Portland, Maine

Helm Oyster Bar & Bistro on Thames Street closed in March 2024. The seafood restaurant opened in February 2021.

The Pizza Joint on Forest Ave in Portland, Maine

The Pizza Joint on Forest Ave closed in April 2024. It originally opened its doors in 1977. That's nearly 50 years!

Essan on Portland Street in Portland, Maine

Esaan on Portland Street closed in April 2024. It originally opened on Forest Avenue in 2016 until a fire forced closure in 2021. It would reopen at its Portland Street location in March 2023.

Broken Arrow on Congress Street in Portland, Maine

Broken Arrow on Congress Street closed in May 2024. The restaurant opened in October 2020.

Falafel Time on Forest Ave in Portland, Maine

Falafel Time on Forest Ave closed in May 2024. The restaurant opened a few years earlier in October 2021.

Liquid Riot on Commerical Street in Portland, Maine

Liquid Riot on Commercial Street closed in June 2024. New ownership rebranded the business as Camp Pennant, which is now open. Originally established as In'finiti in 2013, the Liquid Riot name became in 2015.

Coffee by Design on India Street in Portland, Maine

Coffee by Design on India Street closed in August 2024. That location opened in 1998. The Diamond Street spot is still currently open.

Gross Bakery on Middle Street in Portland, Maine

Gross Bakery on Middle Street closed in September 2024. It opened in July 2019. Just note that Gross Confection Bar will remain open.
