Sometime it's easy to write off Maine's coastal towns because tourists tend to take them over, especially during the warmer months.

However, just because visitors from away flock to a place doesn't mean it's not worth a visit...or two...or three.

What are Some of the Best Towns in Coastal Southern Maine?

One of those destinations is actually not too far from Portland: a place known for incredible ocean views, presidential compounds, and some of the freshest seafood you'll find anywhere. That place is the Kennebunks.

Located in coastal York County, these neighboring towns complement each other remarkably well. Kennebunk is known for its traditional New England charm, while Kennebunkport has earned a reputation as one of Maine's premier resort destinations. Make no mistake, though—both are exquisite.

Kennebunkport is perhaps best known for its charming downtown district, Dock Square. This picturesque area is filled with local shops, galleries, restaurants, and beautiful places to stay. It's also a wonderful place to stroll, relax, and soak in the coastal beauty of the region.

Visitors should also consider taking a drive to explore the area's historic homes, including the famous Bush family compound.

Then it's off to Kennebunk, where any visit should include time on Beach Avenue, home to some of Maine's most popular and beautiful beaches. Gooch's Beach, Mother's Beach, Middle Beach, and Parsons Beach offer everything from sunbathing and swimming to scenic walks along the shore. Visitors can even bring their furry friends, though some restrictions do apply.
