Although gaining popularity over the last several years, disc golf (also referred to as frisbee golf) actually started in the 1960s. As far as where it originated, that's up for debate. According to Wikipedia, different versions of the game were being played in Houston, TX, Augusta, GA, and Santa Barbara, CA, as early as 1964.

If you're not familiar with the phenomenon of disc golf, it's kind of like it sounds –essentially taking elements of frisbee and golf, combining the two. It's much like traditional golf, but instead of hitting a ball into a hole, players throw a disc (similar to a frisbee) into a basket or target.

Players start at a tee area and aim to complete each hole in as few throws as they can. The player with the lowest total score at the end of the course wins. It combines elements of accuracy, distance, and strategy, also like traditional golf. Players navigate obstacles such as trees, bushes, and different terrain variations to reach the target.

As us Mainers know, the kickoff of "spring" on the calendar doesn't always align with springtime activities, as we typically get several inches of snow in March. That did not turn out to be the case this year, allowing disc golf, along with traditional golf courses, to start their seasons early.

Maine has shown to be a very popular spot for the growing sport, with fans usually not having to travel too far to find a course. After doing some research, I was able to find that there are over 80 disc golf courses throughout the state. I would assume that the further north you get, the more likely courses may not be open quite yet. So it's a good idea to check their current hours of operation online, or give them a call prior to making your way out.

According to Disc Golf Scene, Sabattus Disc Golf in Sabattus is ranked as the best disc golf course in Maine. It's also ranked just outside the top 50 course in the entire country at #54.

Bittersweet Disc Golf in North Yarmouth, Pleasant Hill Disc Golf in Scarborough, Enman Field Disc Golf in Brunswick (which appears to now be permanently closed), and Pineland Farms in New Gloucester round out the rest of their top five courses in Maine.

With the top five being situated in Southern Maine, no worries if you're further north. As I mentioned, Maine has 81 disc golf locations and 93 courses throughout the state that you can find here, according to Disc Golf Scene.
