Lewiston, Maine, Unites for One-Year Anniversary Memorial Event

On Friday, October 25, 2024, Lewiston will gather to mark a somber milestone — the one-year anniversary of the tragic events that shook Maine to its core, when 40-year-old Robert Card carried out a mass shooting that killed 18 people.

This event, hosted by the One Lewiston Resilience Fund Committee in partnership with the City of Lewiston and other local organizations, will serve as a moment of reflection and remembrance for the victims of last year’s incidents at Just In Time Recreation and the now-closed Schmengees Bar & Grille.

It will take place at The Colisée in Lewiston with doors opening at 4:30 p.m., with a program starting at 6 p.m. to honor those whose lives were forever changed.

It’s difficult to believe that a year has passed since that horrific night, and the tragedy still weighs heavily on the hearts of the community.

As a Mainer, witnessing something so tragic and unimaginable unfold in our state was nothing short of heartbreaking and shocking.

Sure, we have our crime here like every state, but Maine is different. We have always been a place of peace and resilience, but this was a reminder that even in places like ours, tragedy can strike, and somehow turn out to be one of the worst of its kind in U.S. history.

One Lewiston stated that attendees are invited to bring small mementos, which will be cataloged as part of the Maine MILL Memorial Collection and potentially displayed in future exhibits.

This event is not just about honoring those that we lost, but also looking forward — to healing, resilience, and the creation of a permanent memorial.

Limited parking will be available at The Colisée, but there will be complimentary shuttles running from nearby parking garages starting at 4 PM.
