For a lot of parents, choosing a name for your child can be a lot more difficult than it may seem. There are always trendy names in each generation, but some people prefer that their child have a unique name to stand out above the crowd.

In some cases, that unique name may come from a simple look into the history of a family. Old names can become new again, and the lineage can live on.

In other cases, people look for inspiration from what is around them. Maine happens to be one of those states where there is plenty of inspiration to be found, from the mountains to the lakes to a rich Native American history.

If you're trying to get creative with a name, there are plenty of options to choose from. But that doesn't mean you should. In fact, there are quite a few places throughout the state of Maine where you should pause, think about it, think about it again, and them immediately move on. Those places were meant to be lakes, streams, mountains, or towns. Perhaps we should refer to it as a "DO NOT NAME" list.
