Were You at One of These Legendary Concerts in Maine 30 Years Ago?
Maine has had a thriving live music scene as far back as most can remember. I'm talking the likes of Bruce Springsteen, Jimi Hendrix, The Supremes, Queen, Black Sabbath and Elvis have all performed in our great state over the years.
Most of those legendary shows went down in the 70s but big names were still coming through 30 years ago, and still to this day. Some things come and go, like live music venues as you’ll see from the list below, but the great live music keeps coming.
Were you at any of these concerts from October and November of 1994?
10/4 & 10/5 – We’ll start with none other than the legendary Bob Dylan. Bob played the State Theatre here in Portland two nights in a row. I can only imagine those tickets sold out in a matter of minutes.
10/15 – Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminals played the State Theatre.
10/21 – Tori Amos was at Maine Center for the Arts in Orono, which is now known as the Collins Center for the Arts.
10/23 – Augusta got Fancy with Reba McEntire at the Augusta Civic Center.
10/28 – The reggae-influenced band The Samples played the Wadsworth Gymnasium on the grounds of Colby College in Waterville. A year later, they would end hosting concerts with George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic being the final show.
11/15 – The eccentric and always entertaining Flaming Lips shared the stage with emerging alt rock band Candlebox at the State Theatre.
11/2 – They were really gathering a big fan base around this time, which still holds strong 30 years later. Phish played the Bangor Auditorium. The venue would eventually be demolished in 2013 with the Cross Insurance Center being built to take its place.
11/17 – Melissa Etheridge was near the peak of her career when she played the Cumberland County Civic Center (now Cross Insurance Arena) 30 years ago.
11/17 – Speaking of unmistakable voices, the legendary former frontman of Journey, Steve Perry, played the Central Maine Civic Center in Lewiston, which would later be renamed to The Colisee.
11/16 – Bryan Ferry, the talented Roxy Music singer with the unmistakable voice, played the State Theatre.
