Aerosmith’s First Gig Was at This Massachusetts High School in 1970
Every now and again, a live band will show up at a high school to see how the kids respond.
A few bands did it at my high school in Nashua, New Hampshire, but I couldn't tell you who they were.
If you went to this high school about 30 minutes away from Worcester and 45 minutes from Boston, chances are, you'd remember when Aerosmith played there.
Aerosmith Performs in Mendon, Massachusetts
Out of Steven Tyler's own mouth, according to an interview with David Letterman, Nipmuc High School, was the very first gig that Aerosmith ever had. The members of the band were in their early 20s at the time, and they had been together since they were teenagers.
Letterman commented in the interview that they still look the same to this day.
This gig was one of the ones that led them to getting more fans at future events that weren't just their family and friends.
Nipmuc High School first opened its doors in 1960, according to its athletic Hall of Fame website. It was only a few years later in 1970 when Aerosmith were rocking out at the school.
According to the Milford Daily News, the band was hired for $50 for a fundraiser concert at the school with admission being "either 50 or 75 cents."
The news site noted that Nipmuc Regional High School was originally in Mendon, Massachusetts, before moving to Upton, Massachusetts.
Did Steven Tyler Get Fired From American Idol?
Letterman asked Steven about his time on American Idol, too. How did it affect the band?
Joe Perry piped up and said that at first he was upset about it, but then decided it was a very good thing.
Steven said that he did not get fired from American Idol because there was conflict within the band at that time, and he also had a foot injury and had just come out of a stint at the Betty Ford clinic.
Steven Tyler Grew Up in New Hampshire
Steven Tyler said it himself in another interview with Letterman that he grew up in New Hampshire.
Steven made a comment that the band has no finish line. They will play until they can't play anymore, and I'll be there for it.
Also – side note–- is it weird that Steven and I have the same fashion sense? Everything he wears, I always say to myself, "I wonder where he got that? I've gotta have it."
