Portsmouth, New Hampshire

Whether it's Halloween season or not, if you are into all things spooky, you might want to set aside some time to visit Point of Graves Burial Ground in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.  Many people think it's haunted (this author included) with one tomb that people say actually glows, according to hauntedhouses.com.

Point of Graves Burial Ground

The cemetery was created in 1671, when Captain John Pickering, II agreed to donate his land to have an official City burial ground.  In return, the Pickering family could let their cows graze the land and bury their dead.

If you like tombstones like I do, there are so many that are worth checking out in this graveyard, like, the earliest one of John Hoddy who died in 1684 or Elizabeth Peirce who died in 1717.

There is also a tall, slanted gravestone that is the resting place of two young children, under three years old that died of yellow fever.  They share their final resting place.  It is said that the grief of the parents can be felt near this grave.

The Tomb That Glows

Dr. Vaughn's tomb, located in the right hand corner of the cemetery has been known to glow when captured in a photograph.  The tomb does not glow all the time, however, if the spirit is visiting or if you are particularly empathetic, you might see it.

Where is the Point of Graves Cemetery?

The Cemetery can be found right across the street from the Strawberry Bank Museum parking lot.  There is plenty of parking for you

I don't know about you, but I believe with all my heart and soul that there are spirits that hang around for one reason or another.  I also don't think they are necessarily scary.  As a matter of fact, if I feel a presence, and sometimes I do, especially in some of the old houses of New England, I'll acknowledge their presence by saying hello.

I think it's kind of a shame that horror movies have made ghosts/spirits a thing to be feared.  I don't think that should be the case at all, but that's just me.
