Pharmaceutical Company Laying Off 641 Employees Just Announced More Cuts

A little over a year ago, Takeda, one of the biggest companies in Massachusetts, was financially "in great shape," according to Forbes.  What a difference a year can make.  Takeda announced that they would lay off over 600 employees, according to Boston.com.

Now it seems that Takeda is expecting to cut 189 more positions in Cambridge and another 31 positions in Lexington, according to bizjournals.com.  These additional layoffs will begin in late August, 2024.

All of the layoffs will end in March of 2025.

Takeda has approximately a dozen locations in Massachusetts. The Commonwealth serves as the U.S. hub, according to the Takeda.com,  for many of the company's divisions, including:

  • U. S. Commercial Business Unit
  • Global R&D
  • Global Oncology
  • Global Vaccines
  • Biologics Manufacturing
  • Cell Therapy Manufacturing

Massachusetts is a huge part of the Japanese-based company, and if you start to dig into just how big they are, 641 layoffs doesn't seem that much.  Of course, it is a big deal for the actual employees getting the boot.

Surprising News for Massachusetts Employees

Imagine hearing the news that the employees of Takeda heard last year: that the company was financially secure.  They must be very surprised by this new update.

The U. S. Department of Labor has something called the WARN act, described as "an act that helps ensure advance notice in cases of qualified plant closings and mass layoffs," according the dol.gov.

As much as it stinks for the people getting laid off, at least they have some notice.  If you are a big, medium, or small company, you should let your employees know that layoffs might be happening.  It's the right thing to do.  People make life choices based on their job, so the people at Takeda have until next year to decide to find other employment or wait it out and see if they are one of the people on the list.

Have you ever been laid off?  Did you get notice?
