When you are looking for a job what is the most important thing to you?

Of course we all want to make enough money to live comfortably. Most of us wouldn't mind making more money than we need so we never have to stress about it. That would be nice, wouldn't it?

But there are so many other factors at play when it comes to finding a job that you want  stay at and grow in.

Work life balance

We work to live, not live to work. Americans tend to wear their busyness like a badge of honor and it's so exhausting. We all deserve to get off the hamster wheel once in awhile and enjoy the fruits of our labor; aka spend time with friends and family, exercise, have hobbies and lead a life outside of work. If all you do is work, go home, eat dinner, watch tv and go to bed, what is your identity aside from being an employee at your company?

Benefits

Sure, a big 'ole salary is great! But a company can prove you are valuable by offering you things aside from a fat paycheck. Paid vacations days, good health care, extended parental leave, remote work options, these are all things that can improve someone's quality of life and establish a sense of loyalty to their company.

Culture

If you like your co workers it can make all the difference in the world on how you feel about your job. We have all had a co worker (or two) that we didn't mesh so great with. It can make going to work feel more difficult than it needs to be.

I love to see a company that encourages friendships outside of the workplace through trivia nights, happy hours, and team building activities. Sure, you spend enough time with your co workers but if you get to know them outside of the office, maybe you will enjoy your in-office time a little more.

I was scanning the New Hampshire Reddit thread the other day and someone asked what the best company to work for in New Hampshire is.

Of course it is such a subjective question and totally depends on what is important to this Redditor. But when it came to benefits and culture there was an overwhelming amount of people said they work for Southern New Hampshire University and they feel extremely taken care of.

Current employees claim SNHU provides the following:

  • excellent health insurance
  • free tuition
  • 36 days off per year (25 days of PTO, 11 holidays)
  • ability to work remote, in office, or a blend of both and if you work remote at all you get a biweekly office supply stipend added to your paycheck.
  • since it is a nonprofit, if you have federal student loans they will qualify for forgiveness through PSLF

If you are thinking about changing jobs in 2025 it might be worth taking a peek at their careers page.
