The Cheapest Way to Get to Boston from NH or Maine for an Event or Concert May Surprise You

If you live in New Hampshire or Maine and want to go to Fenway park to see a ballgame or go to one of the area venues around the city, you might think it would be more economical to take a bus and public transit, but, in my experience, that's not necessarily the way to go these days if you want the cheapest way to get there.

The cheapest way, in my book, is to drive yourself.  Stay with me here.  I'll explain further below.

Boston is approximately 70 miles from Concord, New Hampshire.  There's a cool calculator by dollartimes.com that will figure out the cost of gas for you regardless of how much gas is.  For example, if a gallon of gas is $5, the cost of going 70 miles in a car that gets 20 miles per hour, the cost is gas is $17.50.  Okay, let's say $20 bucks to drive yourself.  You have to double that to drive home, so $40.

The cost to take a bus is about the same from a couple of the sites that I've looked at.  One way you fight the traffic yourself, the other option, you can relax.

The additional cost of not driving to the venue comes in when you Uber from where the bus drops you off to wherever you are going.  You could hoof it, (a/k/a walk...) in which case the cost is about the same, however, you will have to be aware of the time to walk back to the bus station to get your ride home.

If you are going to the Garden from South Station, walking is more of an option, it's only about a mile and a half away.  If you are going to Fenway or any of the venues around Landsdown Street, the walk is more like two and a half miles. Still not a big deal if you are in better shape than me.

If you take an Uber, it's going to cost you "high volume" rates, which could be as much as $50 bucks or more, one way.

Yes, there is public transportation, but here's what I do and I find if I split the cost between whoever I am with, it's the cheapest way to go:

If you take your car, you are going to have to pay a lot to park.  On game days at the Garden, if you pay in advance, it'll cost you $60 bucks.  For me, I know it's a FLIPPIN' SILLY price to park, but I pay it for all the reasons I have given here.

How ever you get there, Boston is a really great city.  I always have so much fun when I go there, so even if I go over what I want to with money, it's all good.  I have memories.
