Road Trip Alert: Vermont’s Dog Mountain Is 150 Acres of Pure Off-Leash Freedom for Your Pup
Dog Mountain. Sounds like heaven, right?
As a dog mom of three, I'm always looking for places where they can tag along for the adventure. Why? Because they only get so many years on this earth. So why not help them live life to the fullest!?
I've been booking dog-friendly Airbnbs, taking spontaneous day trips, and even finding new walking trails to explore since the day I brought my babies home. Some of my favorite memories have four paws involved!
That's why I immediately added Dog Mountain in St. Johnsbury, Vermont, to my must-visit list.
A couple of hours north, tucked away on 150 beautiful acres, Dog Mountain isn't your typical tourist attraction.
Created by artist Stephen Huneck, the mountaintop retreat was designed with your furry friends in mind. Visitors are encouraged to let their pups run free, splash in the ponds, wander the trails, and simply enjoy being dogs.
But what makes the property truly special is the Dog Chapel.
At first glance, the whimsical chapel looks like something out of a storybook. Step inside, though, and you'll find walls covered with photographs, handwritten notes, collars, and heartfelt tributes left by visitors remembering beloved pets they've lost. It's a touching reminder of just how deeply our dogs become part of our families.
The combination of art, nature, and love has turned Dog Mountain into something of a pilgrimage site for dog lovers around the world.
They even have a section for shy or elderly dogs!
Anyone who shares life with a dog knows they aren't "just pets." They're hiking buddies, road trip companions, couch snugglers, and the first ones to greet us after a long day. For me, that's three wagging tails waiting by the door.
On June 20, from 12 pm to 4 pm, the annual Founders Celebration Dog Party is taking place, and it sounds like a tail-wagging good time. Held in honor of creators Stephen and Gwen Huneck, the event brings together dog lovers from near and far for a day filled with live music, food trucks, lawn games, dog contests, and plenty of family-friendly fun. Best of all, admission is free!
So if you're looking for a unique New England getaway where your best friend is not only welcome but celebrated, Dog Mountain might just be the closest thing to heaven on Earth for dogs and the humans lucky enough to love them.
Have you ever visited Dog Mountain? Or do you have a favorite dog-friendly destination you and your pup love exploring? I'd love to hear about it!
And maybe add it to my own list of adventures with my three furry travel companions.
