We love a good slogan. It can really make a business stand out from the rest and make them so much more memorable. And if they have a great jingle, FORGET ABOUT IT. It's a done deal.

Some of the best slogans and jingles were born in New England. The first one that comes to mind almost doesn't even need an introduction; I'm talking about the Water Country theme song.

If that doesn't make you want to hop on the Geronimo slide and experience the atomic wedgie of a lifetime I'm not sure what will.

When did businesses start using slogans and jingles for marketing?

Believe it or not the very first slogans/jingles date back to the late 1800's, well before TV! In the1920s-1930s jingles became all the rage as radio became the dominant medium. The first real radio jingle is often credited to "The Chesterfield Hour" (1928), promoting Chesterfield cigarettes with the song, “I’m a Chesterfield Girl”.

Why are jingles/slogans so effective?

Companies quickly realized that music and repetition could help brands stick in consumers’ minds and boy are they sticky! The catchy tunes or memorable phrases became easy for people to recall and because they heard them over and over again. Products became synonymous with the messages they promoted.

Some businesses have slogans that are memorable because they hit us right in the funny bone. Northeastern Fence and Supply Corporation on Route 1 in Saugus is one of those places. I could not love this slogan more! (Thank you to our friends at Northshore Dining on Facebook for allowing us to use the photo below)

My neighbors are actually quite attractive so this slogan doesn't speak to me but it's still hilarious. If I had fencing needs in the future I would most likely reach out to Northeastern Fence because they gave me a giggle.
