Imagine experiencing the holiday season at a magnificent mansion that could've come straight from the pages of a 19th century novel.

You can do precisely that at the fourth annual Sparkling Lights at The Breakers in Newport, Rhode Island, just a short road trip away from New Hampshire and Maine.

Known as the grandest of Newport's "summer cottages", The Breakers was constructed by millionaire Cornelius Vanderbilt II in 1895, and symbolizes "the Vanderbilt family's social and financial pre-eminence in the Gilded Age," according to the property's official website. The exquisite and breathtaking mansion is visited by hundreds of thousands of people from around the world, and was officially designated a historic landmark in the 1990s.
