
The Origin of the Hundreds of ‘Love Locks’ in Portsmouth, New Hampshire
You have probably seen fences covered in love locks in different cities across the country and even the world. It is a sweet tradition where couples write their names on a padlock and lock in with other couples in the community as a symbol of their lasting affection.
I can't help but wonder if anyone has ever had to go back to the fence and remove their love lock after their relationship crumbled. That would be kind of sad but also make for a funny scene in a movie.
We have our own love lock fence in Prescott Park in Portsmouth which started around 2014. Now hundreds (perhaps even thousands) of locks sit proudly on that fence.

There isn’t a single identified founder or organizer—just locals and visitors who contributed and it evolved organically over time .
As a result, these locks don’t tie back to any formal group or purpose beyond that shared romantic gesture.

Some city officials don't have love for the love locks..
According to WMUR, city officials have addressed concerns around weight and safety issues of the fence. and believe it to be a structural concern While the city hasn’t published a precise inventory, the frequent need to periodically remove clusters of locks speaks to just how dense and heavy the tradition has become.
