What is This Dangerous Object Sticking Out of the Water in Hampton, New Hampshire?
How did we all spend our time before we had access to the entire internet from the palm of our hand? I'd really like to know!
When it comes to the internet and its impact on society, there are plenty of negative things I could mention. However, today, I'd like to focus on the positive. There are times when I see people connect with each other via the world wide web in an authentic and human way.
In 1995, if someone noticed something odd on the beach, they may tell their significant other, but would otherwise just see it and move on with their life. In 2024, if someone sees something weird on the beach, they snap a photo and post it to a local Reddit thread. All of a sudden, the comments start pouring in. So many people have noticed that same exact thing before, and have wondered what the heck it is! They feel seen, heard, and validated.
Then, other people are coming up with conspiracy theories about what that thing could be. Each answer is more hilarious and outlandish than the next. People can't help but keep an eye on this comment thread because they don't want to miss a ridiculous hypothesis. Hours of our lives are all lost from monitoring this post, and STILL, no one knows what the heck this thing is.
That, my friend, is the beauty of the internet.
This exact thing happened on the New Hampshire subreddit group last week. AnxiousPhantom posted on r/newhampshire:
Saw this while at North Hampton Beach State Park over the weekend. The pipe is about knee high. It was low tide at the time, otherwise it likely would be covered with water.
Here are some of my favorite answers from the snarky Reddit community:
