You don't need us to tell you that life – especially in New England – is expensive.

The housing market is crazy right now, and countless struggling people are wondering if they can afford to pay rent or buy a house. You definitely know someone in this position; heck, maybe you are that person.

Whatever your financial situation looks like, if you're hoping to move to or find a new place in New Hampshire, you might have a challenging situation on your hands. Properties in the Granite State are in high demand, no doubt due to the state's low crime rate and close proximity to both Boston and natural attractions. So, it's important to recognize which places are affordable, and which ones are on the more expensive side.

But it's not just big cities that prove to be costly – it's also smaller communities.

GOBankingRates, a personal finance website, shared a list of the richest small towns in every state, based on "U.S. Census Bureau income data in locations in every state with 500 to 15,000 households". Their verdict for New Hampshire is a place that's been the subject of lots of praise as of late, most notably for being a fantastic college town and home of one of the nation's best research universities, Dartmouth College.

That's right. According to GOBankingRates, Hanover is the richest small town in New Hampshire, with a median income of $136,992.

Visitors to Hanover can get a cup of Joe at Dirt Cowboy Cafe, considered by Reader's Digest to be the best coffee shop in the state. You can also catch a performance at the Hopkins Center for the Arts, wander the Hood Museum of Art, or grab a bite to eat at Molly's Restaurant & Bar. When it's time to turn in for the night, the historic Hanover Inn invites you to enjoy a boutique, luxury hotel experience with views of the Dartmouth College Green.
