Here’s Why Sam Adams New Beer is Illegal in New Hampshire
What is this, Prohibition or something?
No, but... New Hampshire does have rules and regulations for the beer that is sold in the Granite State. The latest beer from Sam Adams violates one of those rules.
Sam Adams Utopia is 30% ABV
If you didn't know any better, you might think "what's the problem, the ABV is 30%, so what?" Well, New Hampshire has a limit of only 12% ABV, according to WMUR.
By the way, I had to look up ABV, so I'm hoping I'm not the only one. ABV means Alcohol by Volume. This is the the standard measure of how much pure alcohol in the drink itself.
Sam Adams Uptopias 2025 is barrel-aged beer, which I had never heard of and it has the highest ABV in Utopias history, which is 30%.

New Hampshire is not the only state where the beer is illegal. It's also illegal in Vermont, so, it's up to you, Massachusetts and Maine!
The New Sam Adams Beer is Pricey
I guess the higher the ABV, the higher the price. The cost for a 24.5 ounce bottle is $240. WHOA! I mean, I know it's barrel-aged, but damn. They might as well call it a whiskey, but what do I know.
Some Say That New Hampshire Has Tough Alcohol Laws
I know that restaurants in New Hampshire have feared the Liquor Commissioner. They could pull a license at any time. For instance, if you sell booze to anyone under 21, the penalty is a $1,200. If it continues, the Liquor Commission will pull the alcohol license, which could mean sure death for the business.
