Fans of Adam Sandler often put "Happy Gilmore" in the top five Sandler movies of all time.

Like the fact that the main character, Happy Gilmore played by Adam Sandler, is actually based on a real person from New Hampshire.

Is "Happy Gilmore" based on a real person or a true story?

Yes and no.

No, the movie is not based on a "true story," but YES the character was based on Sandler's real life friend...from New Hampshire.

According to a Screen Rant article, "Happy" the ex-hockey player turned golfer, was based on Sandler's friend Kyle McDonough.

McDonough ended up playing professional hockey in Europe, Norway, and Britain after playing for the University of Vermont.

But Kyle McDonough gave Adam Sandler the idea for the movie when they played golf in the 9th grade. McDonough, a hockey player with a temper, was not very good at golf...but he sure could smash the ball far.

Legend has it that Sandler's dad said “there was something funny in there,” and Happy Gilmore was born years later.
