Maine State Police Are Warning of Increase in Car Burglaries
According to the Maine State Police, there has been an increase in car burglaries across the state of Maine. In addition to spikes in Oxford, York and Cumberland counties here in Maine, the warning is also for those living in the New Hampshire Lake regions as well.
Remember to always use caution whenever you're leaving your car alone, whether it's in your own driveway or at the grocery store. Always leave your car locked with the windows up.
Additionally, try never to leave items of high value inside the vehicle, but if you have to, make sure you keep them in a place that it completely out of sight from would-be burglars.
Maine Public Safety Spokeswoman, Shannon Moss, sent out a press release which included several tips for helping to prevent and deter would be criminals from breaking into your vehicle. The release said in part,
Burglary Prevention Tips for Vehicles:
- Don’t leave vehicles running unoccupied
- Always lock vehicle doors and take the keys with you when not in use, even in your driveway
- Do don’t leave personal items in plain sight
- Remove valuables including firearms
- At night, always park your vehicle in a well-lit and visible place
- Don’t leave personal information in your car.
What to do if your vehicle is burglarized:
- Call the police and report the incident as soon as possible
- If you see any suspicious activity, call the police immediately
