A Newburyport man fell 50 feet down a gully while hiking on Mt. Major in Alton Saturday afternoon.

NH Fish & Game said Harvey Weener, 71, was rock climbing earlier with a friend and was hiking out around 4 p.m. on the Precipice Trail about a mile from the nearest trailhead when he fell. The fall left him unable to walk.

Rescue crews had to use ATVs to get near Weener because of the rough terrain, and lowered ropes to reach him.

Weener was brought to the trailhead by 6 p.m. and was flown by DHART medical helicopter for treatment.

A 42-year-old California woman was injured earlier Saturday afternoon at Mount Major when she hurt her leg while hiking. She was transported two miles to the trailhead and taken to Lakes Region General Hospital.

Fish & Game did not disclose if either had purchased a Hike Safe card, which would make them not liable to repay rescue costs.
