One driver is dead and the other charged with operating under the influence and leaving the scene in a motorcycle crash in Newbury Thursday night.

Essex County District Attorney Paul F. Tucker said James Turcotte, 63, of Danvers and Scott Dambrosio, 55, of Boxford were riding together southbound on Route 1 at around 7:45 p.m., just past Beach Dog Daycare, when their motorcycles collided. Turcotte was taken to Anna Jacques Hospital in Newburyport, where he was pronounced dead.

Dambrosio was arrested by Boxford Police and charged with OUI, as well as negligent operation and leaving the scene of a personal injury collision resulting in death. He pleaded not guilty in Haverhill District Court to the OUI charge Friday, and was held on $5,000 bail. He was also held on an outstanding warrant from the Newbury Police Department.

Tucker did not disclose what led the two motorcycles to collide.

Newbury Police asked anyone who saw the pair riding on Route 1 or has surveillance video footage from the area of the collision overlooking Route 1 or on Middle Road in Newbury to call 978-462-4440, ext. 127.
