As the old saying goes, don't judge a book by it's cover. This can be applied to food and restaurants as well! Sometimes the most delicious and authentic meals can be found in the most unassuming places. HECK, when I went to Thailand, my favorite meal I had was from a food truck.

I moved to Portsmouth a little over six months ago and as a foodie, it has been thrilling to live in a place that has so many different types of cuisines readily available. These places are the real deal, too! I've had Nepalese food at Durbar Square, excellent Greek food at Habibi Mediterranean Cafe, and now I just learned that Vietnamese food has been readily available around the corner from me and I didn't even know it! I'm talking about Nikki’s Banh Mi in the Darlene’s Sub Shop on Islington in Portsmouth.

I was almost apprehensive to let this secret out but the Phantom Gourmet did a piece on this spot so the cat's out of the bag. PLUS we are all trying to support local during these Covid times so no local restaurant should be kept a secret!

Nikki's has been in Darlene's for the past six years. Kevin Sarzynski posted on a Facebook group Seacoast Eats and called Nikki's Banh Mi sandwiches, egg rolls, and Vietnamese wings SPOT ON!

I will be trying this place ASAP and will report back. Are there any hidden gem restaurants in your town?
