Richard Flynn, the longest serving Department of Safety Commissioner and former Dover Police Chief Richard Flynn passed away at the age of 94.

Flynn served as commissioner for 35 years and grew the Department of Safety from three divisions (State Police, Motor Vehicles and Safety Services) to eight, adding the Divisions of Emergency Communications; Fire Service; Administration; Fire Standards and Training and Emergency Medical Services; and Emergency Management.

“Saddened by the passing of Dick Flynn, of Dover, who gave so much to his community and the state through a career in law enforcement and service as commissioner of the NH Department of Safety. A friend to all the Sununus, and our thoughts are with his family," Gov. Chris Sununu said in a statement.

He started his law enforcement career as a patrolman and rose through the ranks over 23 years to be chief.

Funeral services for Flynn have not yet been disclosed.
