Over the past decade or so, there have been so many trails, hikes, restaurants, breweries and towns highlighted in Maine, it's easy to lose track of everything.

Most Mainers see that as a good thing. That Vacationland is finally being appreciated for all its natural beauty and what it has to offer.

For others, there's less excitement. The idea that some of their favorite places and things are no longer a 'secret' annoys them. It's fair to want to hold on to Maine as your own.

If you're a fan of one particular small island in southern Maine, you might want to get ready for an influx of additional tourism. That's because Mackworth Island was recently highlighted as one of the most 'mythical' places in the state by National Geographic and a must-visit when passing through Maine.

NatGeo highlighted many of the things that has made Mackworth Island so attractive to locals. It has a serene nature to it. A calming, quiet presence despite the fact that there is often many people walking, jogging or just hanging out.

NatGeo was amazed by a pair of things that have stood out for years on Mackworth. The presence of dozens of 'fairy houses'. Hobby projects put together by visitors to the island. They can come in many different shapes and sizes along the walking trail.

NatGeo was also taken by the pet cemetery on the island that has long been a curious stop for people who pass through. According to MaineTrailFinder.com, the pet cemetery on the island is the resting place for all the beloved animals that belonged to former Governor Percival Baxter.

The feel of the island, the thoughtfulness of the fairy houses and the eerieness of the pet cemetery led National Geographic to deem Mackworth Island as one of the most 'mystical' places in Maine.
