Somebody once said that you can't avoid death and taxes.

Ed and Elaine Brown of Plainfield, New Hampshire, tried to avoid the latter and got thrown in jail, leaving behind what is now one of the most beautiful properties in the state.

New Hampshire Got National Media Attention

In 2007, New Hampshire got national media attention when Ed and Elaine Brown refused to surrender to authorities after being convicted of tax crimes, according to CNN.

No matter what TV station you turned on, there was Ed screaming at the cameras that he and his wife were right about the law (that says nothing about paying taxes), and that they did not have to and would not pay them.

When it came time to take them away to jail and seize their property, Ed Brown warned them that there were explosive booby traps all over the property.  It was a crazy story.

Federal Authorities Eventually Did Take the Property

The house, located on 401 Center of Town Road in Plainfield, New Hampshire, sat on over 100 acres. It was, in fact, seized by the authorities, and the Browns went to prison , according to WCVB.

The house has been sold three times since then.

Here's a timeline of the selling price, according to Zillow.

  • October, 2015: Sold for $205,000.
  • May, 2019: Sold for $315,000.
  • September, 2022: Sold for $1,310,000.

The Zillow listing states that the property has five bedrooms and four bathrooms, a two-car garage, and sits on 103 acres of land.

Whoever bought the property in 2019 put a ton of work into it, because wow. Is it beautiful or what?

I just love all the features of this house. From the doorways to the ceilings, the house has been completely redone.

I am a little (okay, a lot) obsessed with the kitchen!  I LOVE the colors, the appliances, and the tiles.  Just gorgeous.

Ed Brown is still in prison. Elaine was released in February of 2020 and filed for divorce from Ed, according to the Washingtonpost.com. But as far as I can tell, there's been no final divorce decree. I can imagine that Ed isn't the easiest person to negotiate with.

We'd all love to not pay taxes, but, like death, it's inevitable for all.
