This really doesn't come as a surprise to this NH native.  New Hampshire is the number 1 state that drinks the most booze.

Could it be because of the liquor stores that are conveniently located on the highways?  Or, could it be no sales tax in NH.  Maybe it's a combination of both.  Let's dig in, shall we?

According to 24/7 Food Recipes, New Hampshire is the booziest.  They gave this example:

...if you lined up all the alcohol consumed by one New Hampshire resident in a year, you’d have enough to fill nearly five one-gallon milk jugs.

What?  Almost 5 gallons of booze per person?  No wonder we picked up the top spot!

Massachusetts, Maine and Vermont residents make regular trips across state lines to stock up on their alcohol of choice.  That's why you will most always see a NH State Liquor store next to the highway, not far from the state line.

Our relationship with booze, although this wasn't in the article, may also be due to our heritage.  Specifically, our Irish heritage.  I am a Sullivan.  My family has lived in the Granite State for damn near 150 years. My Great, Great Grandfather, John, came from County Kerry, or so goes family legend.  I don't think it's really possible to trace the roots of someone from New England named John Sullivan, who then named his son Patrick.  Too many in the fold.

In Ireland, it is a rough life.  You had to work the fields to feed your family.  After work, there were more chores to be tended to.  If you didn't play the fiddle or the tin whistle, you drank.  Someone had to be an audience for the musicians, right?

In any case, drink up New Hampshire and wear the badge of booze proudly.
