Melissa McAdoo posted in the group Seacoast Eats that there are no Polish restaurants around and whenever she sees a Polish food truck the line is out of control! So, clearly there is a need.

This is Simmy's Polish Express. They are a very popular Polish food truck out of Gardiner, MA:

My grandfather immigrated to America from Poland so needless to say, I run on pierogis and kielbasa. But there is more to Polish cuisine than that believe it or not!

Polish cuisine also has a lot of soups, the most common are barszcz (beet soup) and żurek (sour rye soup). Barszcz can be served hot or cold and lots of people like sour cream in it and dumplings.

Side bar: remember the episode of Rugrats where Chuckie got sprayed by a skunk and he hops in Tommy's grandmothers pot of barszcz and it ends up getting rid of the stench?

Żurek, on the other hand, is known for its distinctive sour taste, derived from fermented rye flour, and is typically enjoyed with sausage and hard-boiled eggs.

You also can't talk about Polish food without a nod to their pasties and sweets. Pączki, are Polish doughnuts filled with jam or other yummy fillings and are traditionally enjoyed on Fat Thursday before Lent.

If there was a local Polish restaurant I would dive into that menu and embrace my Polish culture but alas, there is not!

Folks were very responsive to Melissa's post on Seacoast Eats. Many people agreed that they also wished there were more Polish food options in the area. Some people suggested places that are a bit of a drive or not fully dedicated to Polish cuisine. Those suggestions included:

  • Baltic Kitchen in the White Mountains makes killer handmade perogies and does pop ups.
  • Kasha's Kitchen in Kittery does a Polish dinner on Fridays.
  • Roly Poly in New Britain, CT. They have a hot bar.
  • There’s a small Polish market in Salem, MA called Polonus
  • Bogusha’s Polish Restaurant & Deli - Steven’s Ave., Portland
