The word 'unusual' often comes with a negative stigma. Many consider it another way to say that something is weird or strange. But the Oxford English Dictionary gives this definition for unusual:

"remarkable or interesting because different from or better than others"

So before you jump to conclusions about the 50 towns and cities named the most "unusual" in the nation by Travel A Lot, just know that it's something of a compliment. And if you think of it in a positive light, the choice for Maine makes plenty of sense.

Travel A Lot has named Freeport as Maine's most "unusual" town. Their reasoning stems from the fact that Freeport is home to a rarity in Vacationland: the Desert of Maine.

There's little argument that the Desert of Maine is a tourist attraction because of its peculiar nature. The geological anomaly offers visitors something different to visit in the area, and some great photo ops to share with family and friends.

While there are plenty of towns in Maine that could be deemed "unusual", Freeport is actually the perfect choice. In many ways, it's like a grab bag of goodies from other towns.

Freeport is home to a retail shopping destination in the L.L. Bean signature outlet. Thanks to the popularity of L.L. Bean, many other outlet stores have thrived nearby.

Freeport is home to a terrific stretch of craft breweries. Highlighted by Maine Beer Company, beer lovers don't have to venture far to enjoy several other breweries nearby.

Freeport is also home to one of the most unique McDonald's restaurants in the world. A former farmhouse turned fast-food chain has kept much of the charm that harkens to yesteryear.
