Two motorcyclists were killed in crashes in northern Massachusetts Wednesday night, according to Massachusetts State Police.

A tweet from the agency said that troopers responded to fatal motorcycle crashes in Newburyport and Amesbury on Wednesday.

The operator of a 2009 Yamaha YZFR6 who was trying to accelerate through a tight gap between a tractor-trailer and a 2021 Tesla may have hit the trailer of the truck and then the side of the Tesla. The crash was on Interstate 495 northbound around 7:55 p.m.near Exit 118 (Route 150), according to Massachusetts State Police.

The motorcycle driven by Herring Delgado, 34, from Lowell, overturned and slid off the highway into the median. Delgado was taken to Anna Jacques Hospital in Newburyport where he was pronounced dead.

The driver of the Tesla, a 30-year-old man from South Berwick, stopped while the truck continued. Police said it is not clear if the driver was aware of the crash.

Another Crash in Newburyport

About two hours later, the driver of another Yamaha was hit by a car that had a near collision with another as they travelled north on Interstate 95 in Newburyport near Exit 57 for Route 113 around 10:15 p.m, according to police. The vehicles did not stop and have not been identified.

The driver of the motorcycle, Daniel E. Mena, 21, of Lynn, fell off the Yamaha and onto the road, where he was hit by a Subaru driven by a 49-year-old Newburyport woman who could not stop in time, according to State Police. She spun off the road and hit a guardrail along the shoulder.

Two other vehicles, a 2019 Ford Escape SUV and a 2020 Chevrolet Colorado pickup, were also unable to stop and struck the motorcycle or Mena. They remained at the crash scene, police said.

Video posted by NBC Boston showed a motorcycle lying on the highway and an SUV with a heavily damaged driver's side door.
