I don't know who got the idea of having ME write an article about Mother's Day.  I mean, c'mon.  I cry every day about the smallest thing and it's almost always not a sad thing, it's usually something that touches my heart.  Yup, I'm a sap.  I guess if you look at it that way, who better than the woman who carries tissues and cover-stick wherever she goes just in case of spontaneous tears.

Motherhood is Amazing

I don't have to tell you if you are a Mother, it is literally the toughest, most rewarding job you will ever do.  Those are just words to you if you don't have a child of your own.  Believe me, I thought I was prepared.  Truth is, you never really are.

There Are Things About Motherhood That No One Will Tell You

  • You are not going to realize before you pick the names of your children how many times you will actually SAY that name
  • Taking a shower for 10 minutes when they are first born feels like a dream vacation
  • The older you get, the more you worry about them and what they will do after you aren't around anymore.
  • You take credit or blame for everything they do.

I asked a few Moms here at the studio to chime in on their thoughts on Motherhood and here are a few of their answers:

Naomi McNamara, Senior Account Executive

Naomi gave some pearls of wisdom after going through all childhood years.  Her children are now fully-cooked adults.  Here's her advice:

They will not remember if you painted/decorated their room before they were born;  They won’t remember if you left them to cry themselves to sleep in the crib;  Disney before age 4/5 is a total waste of money; What goes in..... must come out;  Germs are good;  Asking for help is not a sign of weakness;  Daycare/babysitter is not laziness it’s mental health;  They will never learn to get themselves up if you keep picking them up.  If they trip and fall or get hurt let them figure out if they really are hurt and what they want to do about it.

Kristan Bishop, Senior Account Executive

Kristan shared some funny things she remembers about her boys:

My mom always told me that if someone asked a difficult question to answer with a question yourself.  When Ryan, my oldest, was four years old and in the bathtub, he asked what sex was. I was surprised and asked him, "What do you mean?"  He said, "In school we were talking about how difficult it is to tell what sex a whale is!"  Also, you think you’ll remember everything about your kid and what they said, but someone gave me a journal and I wrote down some of the funny things.  My son Matt said that a dinosaur was from "the pre-hysterical age,"  Also, Jack bit a worm in half!  My kids brought out emotions and feelings on all ends of the spectrum that I never knew could be so intense.  Frustration, curiosity, but mostly love.

Christine Sieks, Regional Market President/CRO

Christine expresses what is so hard to put in to words and asks a question that every Mom has asked herself:

What comes immediately to mind for me is the intensity of the love you feel for your child, being beyond anything you’ve ever experienced. You beam when they’re happy; you feel their pain deeply, if not deeper than they do; and they move through every phase of life lightning fast, even though it feels like time is moving very slowly when times are challenging.

On a lighter note, what’s with the socks??! Example, we sold our couch and love seat online. To get the post ready, we vacuumed the couch and propped up the pillows for photos. When the new owners were on their way for pick-up, my husband smartly thought to do one last check under the cushions and unearthed another eight socks after already having cleaned everything a few days earlier!

Thank you, my friends, for sharing those sentiments!

I echo the words above about the love that you feel for your kids.  When Colin was born, my heart exploded with love.  I remember after seeing his little face just laughing and crying with complete and utter joy.  I don't know what heaven is like, but I imagine it feels like that.  He is now a full grown man and the sun still rises and sets on his butt.

Fifteen years after Colin's arrival, the stork arrived for me again and I got three step-children!  They have enriched my life in so many ways.  I often tell my step-son Wesley that I am sorry I wasn't there to see him when he was born, but I came as fast as I could.  I can't imagine my life without him and his sisters, Maya and Audrey.

It's hard to know me and not know about my Mother, Ella.  She meant the world to me.  Talk about a hard worker!  Not only did she have 7 children, (8 pregnancies) but my Dad died when I was very young, leaving her to take care of everything, including the store that we owned and she did.  Ma still found time to spend with us and didn't sweat the small stuff.  Later in life, I realized that we never had any money and that life was difficult for her, financially.  You would never know it with the amount of food, clothes and laughter in that house.  I always thought we were rich and as it turns out, we were.  I miss you, Ella.  Every. Damn. Day.
