The World’s Only Life-Size 1,700-Pound Chocolate Moose is in Maine
Many people who are born and raised in Maine will go their entire lives without ever seeing a moose. The majestic beast is one of the wildlife symbols of the state, but they are far more elusive in the wild than people outside of Maine seem to realize. They also can be incredibly dangerous based on their mammoth size and unpredictable behavior. But if you're absolutely dying to lay your eyes on a moose and want the wild out of the equation, there's a one-of-a-kind moose in Scarborough, Maine.
Behold the 1,700 pound, life-sized moose named Lenny. It's located at the Len Libby candy store at 419 U.S. Route 1 in Scarborough. Unveiled back in 1997, Lenny has been wowing visitors to the Len Libby candy store for more than 25 years and continues to do so today.
If you're curious on how Lenny came to be, the story is actual a simple one. Since so many people associate moose with Maine, Len Libby commissioned artists to sculpt a life-size moose out of their finest chocolate at their store in the spring of 1997. After four weeks of work, Lenny was shown to the public and instantly became a draw for the store.
It's not just Lenny that is a work of art on display either. Lenny stands in a pond at his display which also happens to be made of white chocolate. Artists sculpted the pond and dyed it with food coloring to give Lenny an authentic feeling of home.
You can visit Lenny the moose at Len Libby in Scarborough Monday through Saturday from 9am to 5pm.
