The Dr. John C. Page School was placed in "secure mode" after a vehicle described by police as suspicious was spotted parked in the nearby woods.

West Newbury Police and fire crews approached the vehicle around 10:30 a.m., while the school was secured. No one was allowed to enter or leave the school building.

A man was spotted inside the vehicle, which was wanted in Newburyport for its possible involvement in a car crash. The man was taken into custody and the vehicle will be removed from the woods.

"There is no danger to the school community. The school day is proceeding as scheduled, but students will be kept inside for the remainder of the school day," West Newbury Police Chief Michael Dwyer said in a statement.

Vehicles will not be allowed to drive around the building during the ongoing investigation.

Dwyer said the school's safety and security policies were followed, meaning police, fire, and school officials were in contact with each other.
