83-Year-Old Powerlifter From NH Competing in Maine This Weekend
An 83-year-old man who works out at The Zoo in Epping will be competing in a powerlifting completion at Old Orchard Beach Baseball Stadium in Maine on Saturday.
Peter Hubbard retired from the Navy and said he always kept in decent shape but he did not start powerlifting until he was in his early 60s. He would like to motivate other older adults to take up a sport or physical hobby.
"They don't have to lift like I do. It's about health and like I always say, it's about being able to bend down and give your grandchild a hug when you're 80," Hubbard said.
At the Maine State Powerlifting Championship on Saturday, Hubbard has a goal of being able to bench 210 pounds. He weighs 173.
Hubbard, who lives in Candia, has been married for 16 years to a woman named Nona who he met at the gym when he was a personal trainer. She is 59 years old and hopes to bench 145 pounds on Saturday.
Hubbard said weigh-ins are at 8 a.m. Saturday and the competition begins at 9 a.m.
